Not being able to get out as often as I wanted (work/life getting in the way) I made a commitment to myself to go out this weekend for one last time…. I headed out yesterday (Saturday) morning at first light only to get busted by a coyote on my walk in. The wind was blowing right to the coyote causing it to run off in a hurry. I thought about setting up anyway but the smarter side of my brain said go home and try it tomorrow instead….So I went home and back to bed.
So this morning the wind was good for my setup so I went back to the same farm/spot. I got there at first light and waited a few minutes for things to settle down before beginning to call. I screamed out with my dying rabbit sounds for 15 minutes or so before spotting a coyote about 300 yds out on my far left… It was not coming closer despite changing up sounds. It eventually trotted off out of sight. 5 minutes later another coyote is spotted around the same area, it too won’t come any closer and follows the same path as the first one, trots out of sight…
Now with two coyotes in the area, me sitting for about 20 minutes and them not wanting to come to my rabbit sounds, I decide to try some coyote vocals…. A few howls, some barks, some pup distress for about 10 minutes….nothing is seen….. I sit quietly for 5 minutes and begin with coyote howls again…. Maybe 2 minutes go by and I see this first coyote standing on the edge of the bush looking in my direction. I immediately turn on the ecaller to make a small dying rabbit sound…. It gets curious and begins walking along the edge of the bush toward me. I get a little worried as he begins getting closer I hope the wind holds. He then stops suddenly and begins cutting across the field, I “wolf” her, she stops and with one quick shot from the .223 the 55gr bullet finds it’s mark and she falls down dead….. Pup distress kicks in and I watch and wait…. 5 minutes go by and nothing comes out….
I start to think about the second coyote I seen earlier, maybe he too is still around. I begin playing coyote vocals again on and off for 6-7 minutes, decide nothing more is coming so I stand up. Once I stand up I look around and there is coyote #2, standing on the edge of the bush. I quickly sit back down and begin playing a small dying rabbit sound…. It got his attention but he wasn’t sure what to do. He paced back and forth along the edge for about a minute or two (maybe looking for his mate) before deciding to come closer to investigate. As he reached the 60 yds mark, I “wolfed” him, he stopped and I took the shot. A couple of spins and he is down for the count. I stayed and called for another 5 minutes hoping for a 3rd but did not see anything else…
The larger male had a good hide, the smaller female, not so much…. Enjoy the pics….
